What are the different uses of pressure gauges?
Pressure gauges are generally used for measuring the conditions of a fluid. This instrument measures the force that the fluid would exert when at rest. Pressure gauges help in computing the pressure of a liquid containeror a vessel of compressed gas. They are usually connected with a remote reading thermometer.This instrument’s application is extensive, from checking the pressure on the car tiers to measuring different regulatory systems inside any power plant.
Pressure gauges can measure different types of pressure, i.e.:
· Absolute pressure gauges
These gauges are used to measure the vapor pressure of liquids, vacuum reactors and to check any leakage in tanks and circuits. Meteorologists monitor the rise and fall in pressure on the gauges. They perform distillation operations in the oil refining industry according to the adiabatic saturation pressure. This gauge is used in vacuum pumps and the food packaging industry. The barometer is one of its examples that is used to measure atmospheric pressure.
· Gauge pressure
Gauge pressure is measured according to the standard atmospheric pressure at the sea level. They are extensively used to measure the pressure of industrial instruments utilized in refineries, electronics, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing, etc.
· Differential pressure gauges
This pressure gauge gives the reading of two different measurements. It has applications in industries like filtration, liquid level, and liquid flow.
· Liquid-filled gauge
A liquid-filled gauge is used on the damp vibrations and pulsation to minimize their effects on the gauge dial pointer to give out correct reading. They are used generally in dynamic applications where frequent shocks and pressures might suddenly arise.
Different types of pressure gauge
· Bourdon tube
Bourdon tube is shaped in the English letter ‘c.’ The tube outwardly stretches when pressure is exerted on it. The tube is attached to a pointer via a link-gear system, making the pointer move along the scale. There is an opinion gear too, which moves the pointer’s position to indicate the amount of pressure applied on the Bourdon tube.
· Diaphragm
A diaphragm gauge includes an elastic membrane, which elongates when pressure is exerted on it. It is a single sheet that elongates to join two diaphragms to form a capsule. It measures more subtle pressure changes. The use of calibration determines the desired pressure from a deflection by opening the reference face to the atmosphere or sealing it against a vacuum to measure the absolute pressure.
· Bellow
It is another type of stacked diaphragm. While the stacked diaphragm is made of several sheets, the bellow is made of a single sheet. It gets expanded when the pressure is exerted to get longer. All the bellow movements are transmitted by a link connected to the pointer, which indicates the pressure applied on the bellow. Using an adjustable snubber can simplify the application of gauge.
